Merlot V

Merlot V is the undisputed pin-up of the yard, dapple grey, effortlessly handsome, and, as the team puts it, the “Porsche 911 Carrera S” of the barn. But he backs up the looks with plenty of substance. Primarily Alexandra Grant's event horse, Merlot is bold and blood, at his happiest galloping across open country and tackling cross-country fences, where he's jumped up to 1.10m eventing, alongside 1.20m in the show jumping ring.

His good looks and sharp brain carry over into the dressage arena too, where he scores consistently well with rider Hanna Outram, who is very fond of him. Across the full one-day event, dressage, cross-country, and show jumping, Merlot is a consistently strong performer, rarely finishing outside the top three. The fittest horse in the stable, he thrives on hacking out and staying in top condition. Once shy as a younger horse, he's matured into a confident, affectionate character who loves a scratch, a cuddle, and, without fail, his post-ride mash and attention from his favourite people.
